Epoxy flooring is one of the most important subjects to review in the commercial & industrial sector especially in for business in the Dallas/Fort-Worth, Austin, San Antonio and Houston regions. Laboratories, plants, industrial warehouses and other locations exposed to heavy traffic, chemical spills and other contact with external forces must have a durable solution. Most companies act in a reactive response to floor damage, which results in frequent and high maintenance costs combined with effects to daily operations of their respective activities. The best solution for floor coatings is dependant on a multitude of factors, as there isn’t a one size fits all solution.
What are my flooring options?
I’m sure you already guessed epoxy coatings is the most popular solution for floor protection. The advanced durability of industrial epoxy flooring is the preferred choice for owners of industrial properties, garages, laboratories, warehouses and other types of plants (food & beverage).
How does it work?
Epoxy is a thermosetting resin that is applied in a liquid state. It forms as a strong and rigid plastic type barrier when combined with a polyamine hardener. The hardener is essentially the catalyst that will dry the epoxy resin. Once the hardener and epoxy are mixed, the applicator only has a certain amount of time before the product mixed hardens.
Epoxy cures and becomes harder over time till it reaches optimal level (7 days). The curing process produces cross-linked polymer structures with gives its incredible durability and rigidness.
Urethane Floor Coatings
Polyurethane or Urethane coatings are another common type of floor coatings essential for industrial floor applications. Contrary to common belief, Urethane coatings should not be directly applied to existing concrete floors. However, is most effective as a topcoat sealer over Epoxy coatings. The Urethane film over epoxy coatings creates a softer barrier that will give the floor heat and moisture resistant properties, ideal for the food and beverage sector. Urethane coatings is also an excellent barrier against chemical spills, ideal for laboratories and other manufacturing production floors.
How does it work?
A Urethane coating is extremely flexible, abrasion resistant and provides a high gloss finish. Similar to Epoxy coatings, it is a two part system that when combined requires a curing time. The pot life and re-coat period makes it a preferred choice by contractors and property owners.
